A seagull about to take flight on the Brooks River in Katmai National Park in Alaska.
Sometimes a great image just occurs by accident. I flew to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park at the end of July to take pictures of brown bears, that usually congregate along the falls fishing for salmon running upstream. However, the salmon run had been early this year so there were no salmon so there were no bears. Only one brown bear walked quickly across the river in front of the falls and didn’t even try to fish for salmon. Since there were no bears and everyone's long lenses was all set up on the viewing stand, we were all taking pictures of whatever was in front of us- the occasional salmon jumping the falls, shrubbery and seagulls. Out of frustration and boredom, I made this graphic image of a seagull, wings extended, in a striking pose, about to fly away.
