Bear and Falls
Brown bear growling in front of Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska.
We tried landing near a remote creek in Katmai National Park, Alaska, but the pilot wouldn’t land the small floatplane because of bad weather. The other isolated bear viewing spots were also socked in, so we flew back to Brooks Falls knowing that the July salmon run was almost over and therefore not expecting too much bear activity. Happily, a number of bears did try fishing for salmon in front of the falls. This one particular brown bear, who was not too successful a fisherman this day, struck an ominous pose, growling in apparent frustration, in front of Brooks Falls. I made this image as he paused ever so briefly to snarl and perhaps plan his next move.
